Radical Love in the Time of Pandemics - A USOS Action Dialogue

This dialogue seeks to draw upon past and current examples of alternative educational projects to reimagine schools and communities as learning spaces that inspire activism and hope and serve as sanctuaries of radical love. The chaotic state of public education resulting from the pandemic and economic crises once again opens a door to disaster capitalism reminiscent of the dismantling of the New Orleans public school system following Hurricane Katrina. The technology and private education industries are reaping billions in profits while parents, teachers and students struggle to adapt to remote online and digital learning (if they even have access to that). To counter the corporatist agenda, as education activists, we are working to seize this moment to reimagine a radical progressive vision of public education in which we challenge systemic racism, engage in restorative and transformative practices, cultivate pathways for student and community leadership, support abolitionist curriculum development, and use technology as a resource for creative, student-centered learning.
